    Biography

    Laurence S Harbige was born and educated in London. His primary research interest is in the role of fatty acids and related lipids in immune function, inflammation and autoimmune disease. Between 1982-1992 he worked in the Department of Biochemistry and Nutrition, headed by Professor MA Crawford, Nuffield Laboratories of Comparative Medicine (Zoological Society of London) where he undertook research on essential fatty acids and antioxidants in animal and human biology. At the Nuffield Laboratories he also began work on fatty acids in multiple sclerosis and experimental autoimmunity, receiving his PhD from Brunel University. In 1992 he moved to take up a Research Fellow position in the Department of Immunology, headed by Professor DC Dumonde, United Medical and Dental Schools of Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals (UMDS), University of London (now King‘s College London). In addition to continuing his research interests in autoimmunity and fatty acids at UMDS he also lectured undergraduate medical students. In 1997 he joined the School of Chemical and Life Sciences at the University of Greenwich as a Senior Lecturer and was appointed Reader in Nutrition Metabolism and Immunology in 1999. With his research group he continued work on fatty acids in immune function, inflammation and metabolism as well as undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. Dr Harbige has also been active in research on the immunobiology of probiotics and intracellular parasites and the role of cytokines in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis and type 2 diabetes. In 2017 he moved to the School of Life Sciences and Computing, London Metropolitan University where he continues his research and teaching activities and is currently a visiting lecturer at King’s College London and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He has over one hundred scientific publications including primary research papers, reviews, conference communications, book chapters, named inventor on patents and is a regular peer reviewer for over a dozen international scientific journals. He has acted as an expert adviser, as well as a grant reviewer for the UK MRC, BBSRC, Wellcome Trust, DoH, Food Standards Agency and several medical research charities and MRC South Africa. Dr Harbige is a Senior Editor for Journal of Inflammation and has served on conference and specialist committees of the British Society for Immunology, Nutrition Society, International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids (ISSFAL) and International Society for Immunonutrition (ISIN). He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology, Higher Education Academy and Royal Society of Medicine.
